HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO HIRE A BESTSELLING AUTHOR?

Quality does not come cheap, but your book is not something you want to skimp on—after all, it's going to have your name on it. It is your calling card and your legacy. You must hire the best author you can afford.

Jackson's rates are tailored to the scope and complexity of your project and in what capacity you hire him, as well as what credit he receives. For example, projects he receives sole or co-credit for will be priced lower, while "[Your Name] as told to Jackson Dean Chase" biographies or memoirs will be priced higher. Projects for which he receives no cover credit or only limited interior credit (such as "Special Thanks to Jackson Dean Chase") go for his highest rates.

Jackson normally charges a set rate per word, although he will consider flat rate projects, assuming they don't exceed the agreed-upon word count. A book averages 250 words per page. For your convenience, here are the industry standards for word counts:

  • Short Story: under 7,500 words
  • Novelette: 7,500-17,499 words
  • Novella: 17,500-39,999 words
  • Novel: 40,000+ words minimum (although "Short Novels" fudge this)
  • Nonfiction: Variable, approx. 25,000-75,000 words

What's included? Jackson's base rate as an author, co-author, or ghostwriter includes writing and limited research and revision, as well as line editing, copy editing, and proofreading. A limited amount of developmental editing is included, as are weekly half-hour video calls to discuss the project and its progress. Jackson guarantees you will receive a virtually error-free manuscript. While a manuscript is never 100% error-free no matter how many times you go over it, Jackson's average 95-99% error-free.

He requests a 50% deposit upon signing the contract; the remaining amount is split into payments due when he completes mutually-agreed milestones. These include rough draft completed, final draft completed, etc. Jackson will invoice you when each payment is due. He accepts Paypal or Stripe.

Discounts: In many cases, Jackson's services can be bundled for a discount or purchased individually. He offers a multi-book discount for series. He may be willing to negotiate his per word or flat fee rates for a percentage of sales, assuming you have sufficient platform to demonstrate what kind of return he can expect by doing so.

What's not included in his base writing rate? Extensive research, revision, or developmental editing. Tradpub pitches. Book formatting. Self-publishing and marketing advice. Coaching. These services cost extra and are negotiated per item and project.
